Something is Dangerous in the State of Denmark

Over the years I can safely say that our pootling around on Festina is usually pretty much risk free , but lately I there is little doubt we have been putting ourselves in real danger!
I refer of course to our intensive study of Danish pastries . After 2 weeks of hazardous exposure I can now tell you that they contain so much butter and sugar that they should carry a health warning. Every town or even village has its own bakery ( or 4!) and inevitably the quality varies . One establishment in a little village called Ballen on the island of Samso was so good it would be worth making a detour there just to taste the pastries and perhaps more importantly the speciality breads , because , truth to tell , the pastries are usually too sweet for me. In fact , what we call a “Danish” , is referred to here as a “Viennese” ; at least I think that’s the translation.

Despite rather “iffy “ weather , the last few days have been splendid . The town of Svenborg was full of old wooden sailing vessels being repaired , the little archipelago to the South looks like an amazing place to potter , but the real gem is the island of Aero. It’s a long thin island 30 miles to the north of Kiel , and sheltering the aforementioned shallow archipelago from the South. The ferries from Fyn dock at Aeroskobing which is a sizeable little town made up entirely of hundreds of gaily painted little medieval houses with never a straight edge in sight , making it almost impossibly attractive.

Just along the coast is the fine old shipbuilding town of Marstal , which is almost as attractive but has as its piece de la resistance a maritime museum of superlative quality that would justify the trip from England all on its own.

In between all this fun we have watching the weather closely , and the initially wonderful forecast of easterly winds looks much less wonderful as time goes by . Nevertheless , unless the tea leaves radically change tomorrow morning , we will leave Danish waters for German Kiel ( this will be our thirteenth change of courtesy flag so far this trip) and the canal to the North sea.
